What the Book tell us about the dead is cozing. As we’ve been told the dead suffer no pain. Don’t fear the dead they can´t harm us. We can´t help them and they won’t help us.

What if we chose to be happy anyway?

There are basically two types of people when it comes to existential questionning:

• Believers;
• Atheists.

The bum rap about atheism is most of the time it leads to a cynical outlook on life. Should it though?

Believers of all faiths could agree that they believe in there being a point to the things that happen. Be it because of karma or original sin, things happen for a reason though, as a believer, you accept that it is beyond your capacity to understand why.

To be an atheist is not to deny this option to anyone, it’s not to start arguments: to be an atheist is to find consolation in something very similar.

Without a purpose or higher power, the atheist is confronted with the absurdity of existence. Why be born to get sick and die and be forever separated from everything you knew in life? But it’s the very absurdity of life that can allow you to choose to be happy.

What is the rational reaction when faced with absurdity? There isn’t one.  What can be rational when faced with irrationality! From the moment you realize this, you have a choice: since any reaction is as good as any other you get to choose, and be responsible for, your reaction. Why not choose to be happy? Even if nothing exists outside the mind and the outside world is an illusion, it’s one we’re stuck in for a while.

Why not make the experience pleasant?

That’s the little known subtitle to Tolkien’s The Hobbit…not a snide remark.

My father passed away quietly at 8:45 am Sunday after the most restful sleep we’d seen him have in a week. Happened about two minutes after the nurse and I had finished shaving him. I hesitated a second and decided to sit by his bed and hold his hand. The moment I took his hand he took a deep breath and I suddenly realised it was the end. He took two more breaths and it was over. I waited a bit before calling in a nurse since she had just left. I figured if my dad waited until she had left us alone together I should at least make sure “the moment” was over and not ruin it for either of us. Once the nurse arrived to take down the time of death I called my mom to tell her since she’d just left to take a shower as we were shaving him.

Dad went into palliative care this morning. I don’t like euphemisms and so I prefer the French term “mourroir” which comes from the french verb “mourrir” ie: to die (hence mourroir: a place where one goes to die)

However the sooner the better I guess. As of last week the cancer has been eating his brain and most of the time he neither recognizes me or my mother and he often doesn’t know from moment to moment where he is.

Only shit fuckers would allow people to euthanize a sick dog and not a terminally ill human being. However because life is absurd the only consolation is knowing that choosing to be happy in the face of its nonsense is no less rational a reaction as anything else.
